Science immersion workshop for journalists at Metcalf Institute (US)

The University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute – whose purpose is to foster “informed public conversations about environmental issues” – is accepting applications for its 21st Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists, June 2-7, 2019. Ten fellowships are available – two of them for journalists outside the United States – which includes room, board, tuition, and travel reimbursement up to US $1,000 for internationally-based journalists.

The program is aimed at early- to mid-career, full-time journalists from all media who are looking to start or expand their coverage of the environment. “Applicants must demonstrate a clear need for scientific training in topics relating to global change coastal environments, specifically related to climate change and water resources.”

Workshop: The Secrets of Science Writing (Sydney)

Science journalist Bianca Nogrady (founder of this website)  is running a one-day workshop on science writing, at Writing NSW in Sydney on Saturday 24 November. The course will equip you with the tools to find good science stories and the scientists who inhabit them; to understand the basic principles of science writing including background research and how to read a scientific paper; the key elements of news and feature writing; and how to breathe colour and life into your subject matter. Science immersion workshop for journalists

The Metcalfe Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting is accepting applications for its 20th Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists, June 10-15, 2018. There are ten positions available, and it’s open to journalists from around the world. Applications close February 12, 2018.

“Do you have the knowledge and context to bring your news audience accurate, science-based stories about hurricanes, hazardous drought conditions, coastal storms, flooding and other extreme impacts caused by climate change? Would you like the tools, resources and understanding to investigate and break stories on important environmental issues?”
