In memory of former ABC Science editor Darren Osborne, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation has set up this six-month paid cadetship for emerging science writers from regional Australia.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science runs a paid internship program for news writers based at the magazine Science in Washington. The internships are six months long, and there are four intake periods throughout the year.
- Cosmos magazine internships (unpaid)
Cosmos magazine offers a four-week internship at its office in Melbourne for individuals interested in science writing, and preferably with a university qualification in science or journalism. Please note, this internship is unpaid.
- Ensia mentor program (paid)
Online environmental magazine Ensia offers a mentoring program to give aspiring science communicators and journalists the opportunity to work with a more experienced mentor to create an article, video, image gallery or other work on a topic of their choice.
The European Southern Observatory offers regular three to six month science journalism internships, based near Munich, Germany, for individuals either studying or recently completed a degree in science, science communication or science journalism.
The Economist magazine offers an annual three-month internship in London in the middle of the year, for aspiring science journalists. Applications close late January each year, and applicants must be prepared to come for an interview in London or New York.
- The Scientist internships (paid)
The Scientist magazine offers four-month paid remote internships aimed at individuals with some experience in science journalism. Interns work from home (as long as they can keep east coast US hours), and there are three intakes of interns each year.
