Marine Biological Laboratory Logan Science Journalism program – applications invited.

Happy new year everyone! Kicking 2020 off with a call for applicants for the Marine Biological Laboratory Logan Science Journalism program in Chicago.

This offers ” professional science journalists, writers, editors, and broadcast journalists a chance to forget about story deadlines and immerse themselves in the process of basic biomedical and environmental research.” There are two intensive ten-day programs – one in biomedical research and one in environmental research – and the fellowship covers accommodation, course fees, and travel expenses. Early-career fellowships at The Open Notebook

The Open Notebook/Burroughs Wellcome Fund fellowship for early-career science writers (less than two years’ writing experience) is open for the next two rounds of the fellowship, from January 2, 2020 – August 31, 2020 and July 1, 2020 – February 28, 2021.

The eight-month fellowship is remote and part-time. Fellows will report and write six articles for publication at The Open Notebook with the guidance of a mentor who will help shape story ideas, provide reporting and writing guidance, edit final copy, and offer career-development mentoring. Fellows and mentors will also be part of a professional discussion group composed of former fellowship participants and TON editors. Each fellow will receive a stipend of US$4,200.

Scribe Varuna residency for science/history non-fiction manuscript

If you have a non-fiction science, micro-history or history manuscript hiding in your top drawer, here’s the chance to bring it forth and give it life. Varuna – the writers’ house in Katoomba – is partnering with independent press Scribe Publications to offer a week-long, publishing-intensive mentorship and residency.
“The residency includes manuscript feedback and meetings with Scribe editorial staff, independent writing time in your own private writing studio, accommodation and meals. Scribe editors live with the writers at Varuna, and meet with each writer at the beginning and end of the week to discuss your project. Evenings offer the opportunity to meet with other writers and the Scribe editors over dinner to chat about publishing and writing.” Details about how to apply are here and applications are due by August 11.

Writer-in-residence fellowship at Charles Perkins Centre

The Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney is once again offering its $100,000 Judy Harris Writer in Residence Fellowship to enable an Australian writer in a creative genre to “work on a project related to the issues that the Centre is dedicated to addressing, including health, wellbeing, food, ageing, social disadvantage and cultural identity.”

The fellowship has so far been awarded to Charlotte Wood, Mireille Juchau, Alana Valentine and Emily Maguire. It includes working space at the Charles Perkins Centre Research and Education Hub, full access to the University’s library and the opportunity to work with the Centre’s researchers, educators and clinicians.

Darren Osborne science cadetship at ABC open for applications

Darren Osborne was the long-time science editor at the ABC, co-founded of Sydney Science Writers, an unrepentant space nerd, and lovely bloke who was taken far too young by cancer. In his memory, the ABC has established this regional science cadetship: a 6 month, full-time paid position with ABC’s Science unit in Ultimo, Sydney.

Applicants must be from outside a major metropolitan area, with a genuine enthusiasm and passion for science, some experience in digital content production, preferably a qualification in a science-related field (desirable), and good communication skills. Science immersion workshop for journalists at Metcalf Institute (US)

The University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute – whose purpose is to foster “informed public conversations about environmental issues” – is accepting applications for its 21st Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists, June 2-7, 2019. Ten fellowships are available – two of them for journalists outside the United States – which includes room, board, tuition, and travel reimbursement up to US $1,000 for internationally-based journalists.

The program is aimed at early- to mid-career, full-time journalists from all media who are looking to start or expand their coverage of the environment. “Applicants must demonstrate a clear need for scientific training in topics relating to global change coastal environments, specifically related to climate change and water resources.”

Travel fellowships for the 2019 World Conference of Science Journalists

The 2019 World Conference of Science Journalists – a biennial event held next year in Lausanne – is inviting applications for travel fellowships to enable journalists to attend who might not otherwise be able to.

The conference is the flagship event of the World Federation of Science Journalists, and attracts thousands of journalists, editors and associated professions from around the world. For a run-down of the 2017 San Francisco conference, check out this blog post.

The fellowships are open to “Anyone who actively writes, edits or produces science news, information or commentary for an independent media, working as staff employee or freelance journalist, or is a member of one national Member Association belonging to WFSJ, and who normally would be unable to attend the Conference without financial assistance.” In Australia, the Member Association is the Australian Science Communicators. Science journalism fellowship at BuzzFeed Sydney

BuzzFeed News is offering a paid, 12-week fellowship in science journalism at its Sydney office. The fellowship, which was established in partnership with the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science and the Australian Science Media Centre, is based with the head of news and social news reporting in Australia but will also work with BuzzFeed’s international science desk.

 

They’re looking for a candidate with experience in science news, strong writing skills, an established social media presence and a “genuine love for and excitement about science and the internet.”

Arizona State University Sustainability Journalism Fellowship – applications due May 15

Arizone State University offers a Fellowship in Transdisciplinary Science, to support a journalist to be “on the frontlines of research to see how scientists grapple with the problems of today’s world and forge new directions in science”. The one-month fellowship provides a stipend of US$8000, and is aimed at mid-career science journalists with at least seven years of experience in reporting on the selected topic. Applications invited for Australian Antarctic Division Media Program

The Australian Antarctic Division’s Media Program offers journalists the chance to visit Antarctica and Macquarie Island to report on the AAD’s activities. The program offers either a one-week trip to Antarctica or two weeks on Macquarie Island during summer. Applicants must have clearly defined story ideas or a targeted proposal, and will work with the AAD media team to refine their project. Applications for the 2018/2019 program are due by 18 May 2018.
