Please note: memberships renew at the end of financial year (not from the date of joining), but if you join in the last quarter of the financial year (April-June) you get that quarter free.
There are three categories of membership:
Full membership (AU$100/year)
Full membership of SJAA gives you access to all the benefits listed above, and a vote at general/annual general meetings. To qualify, you must be able to show that you are substantially and actively involved in the practice of independent science journalism, either print, online, radio, podcast, television or as a tertiary lecturer. Science journalism should be your primary profession, focus or source of income.
In your application, please provide links to three science journalism bylines within the past 12 months OR at least one producer/presenter/researcher credit on science-related broadcast/podcast/video/documentary OR listing on a scientific publication masthead, or science editorial listing on a mainstream publication masthead or online equivalent OR evidence that you work as a tertiary science journalism educator.
Associate membership (AU$75/year)
Associate membership of SJAA gives you access to all the benefits of membership but without voting rights. This is for individuals who do not meet the criteria for full membership but are able to show an engagement with, support of, commitment to or interest in science journalism.
In your application, please describe your engagement with, support of, commitment to or interest in science journalism.
Student membership (AU$40/year)
Student membership of SJAA gives students access to all the benefits of membership, without voting rights. You must be able to show you are a current undergraduate or post-graduate student with an interest in science journalism.
In your application please list your degree/course and institution of enrolment, and why you are interested in joining.
