Nature is looking for a full-time, in-house senior science reporter, based either in Sydney or Shanghai, to cover developments in the Asia-Pacific region and reporting to the Asia-Pacific news bureau chief. Desirable skills/experience include the “ability to identify and generate news and features stories of interest to Nature’s readers; ability to write accurately and with flair about complex topics to tight deadlines; enthusiasm for, and basic fluency in, multiple science topics; understanding of the science community, science policy and research landscape in Asia-Pacific.”

Sydney-based, full-time medical writer position

The iQ Group Global – a Sydney-based medical affairs service organisation for the life sciences sector – is looking for an in-house full-time medical writer. The position will involve producing “high quality medical/scientific and other technical content for client company (pharmaceutical, medical device, complementary medicines) projects, as well as internal CRC/IQGG business activities.”

They are looking for someone with five years’ experience as a medical writer, an understanding of the pharmaceutical/biotech industry and pipeline, a track record in “producing a variety of medical, scientific or healthcare industry related content for an employer or third parties from the technical to the creative”, able to write for a range of audiences, and experience with digital media platforms.

The Guardian Australia has advertised for an environment editor, to be based in Sydney or Melbourne but with the possibility of other locations. John B. Oakes Award for environmental journalism – entries close April 22

Entries for the Columbia Journalism School’s John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Environmental Journalism are due on Monday 22 April. The award, which was established in memory of the environmental journalism pioneer and writer for the New York Times, recognises “news reporting that makes an exceptional contribution to the public’s understanding of environmental issues”. It is open for any works of environmental journalism published in the United States in 2018. There’s an entry fee of US$50, and a cash prize of USS$5000. Details and entry are here.

American Institute of Physics science writing awards, due March 29

The American Institute of Physics‘ annual science communication awards are open for entries, and their aim is to “improve the general public’s appreciation of the physical sciences, astronomy, math and related science fields”. The categories include Science Writing: Books, Science Writing: Newspaper, Magazine, and Online Articles, and Broadcast and New Media. Winners receive a prize of US$3,000, an engraved Windsor chair, and a certificate of recognition. Entries are due by March 29, 2019, and more information is available here.

Darren Osborne science cadetship at ABC open for applications

Darren Osborne was the long-time science editor at the ABC, co-founded of Sydney Science Writers, an unrepentant space nerd, and lovely bloke who was taken far too young by cancer. In his memory, the ABC has established this regional science cadetship: a 6 month, full-time paid position with ABC’s Science unit in Ultimo, Sydney.

Applicants must be from outside a major metropolitan area, with a genuine enthusiasm and passion for science, some experience in digital content production, preferably a qualification in a science-related field (desirable), and good communication skills.
